First things first
This review has no spoilers.
I started watching this series because I love detective stories. I didn’t read any review or receive any previous recommendation. It’s one of those dramas I found by chance and ended up becoming one of my favorites of 2020.
The Good Detective is a South Korean series of 16 episodes, released on July 6th 2020. Its genre is crime, drama and thriller.
Synopsis
The drama follows the battle between detectives who try to reveal the truth, and those who frequently cover it up.
Kang Do-chang is an excellent detective who is about to receive a promotion after 18 years of service. On the other hand, there’s Oh Ji-hyuk, a detective graduated from the Korean Police University, who comes back to work after a year of absence. He is a bit distant and quiet, but does a great job.

Both are part of the same team, and an investigation points them to a homicide that happened 5 years ago. The culprit from that case is in jail and about to fulfill the death penalty.

Jin Seo-kyung is a bold reporter always searching for the truth. She receives information about the culprit’s innocence and shares that intel with the detectives. But, if his innocence is true, all the detectives involved in that case will be responsible, and one of them is Kang Do-chang. That’s the beginning of a fight between those who search for the truth and those who try to hide it.
In general terms
The plot of The Good Detective is very well structured, from beginning to end.
Step by step we get to see how everything is coming together. Many things happen, and those who want to expose the truth can’t do it until they find consistent evidence; which is very complicated because, very close by, are people trying to cover up everything, at all costs.
This drama kept me at the edge of my sit the entire time. It’s a thriller filled with intrigue and turns. Also, you end up caring a lot about the main characters. I cried during many events during the series. It’s filled with emotions.
Why do I recommend The Good Detective?

The Plot
As I already mentioned, the plot is excellent. You may think it’s the typical detective story (which I love, by the way), but this time it’s not just that. You can see injustice up close, corruption and manipulation from many sides, not only from the police. Besides, you get to know the story of the person wrongly accused 5 years ago, and what happened to his daughter after he was imprisoned, which is the reality of many people who goes through this kind of situation.
The characters
All the characters are great, not only in terms of acting, but the characters themselves are well developed. I must point out that the team of detectives made me laugh a lot, and at the same time, it was very emotional to see their teamwork, commitment and fellowship.

Besides them, there are many important characters, and as the story unfolds, you see how some of them change and you get surprised up until the end.
The bromance between both main characters, Detectives Kang Do-chang and Oh Ji-hyuk, is great; both make a great team despite their differences, and they share many emotional moments.
A little ending note
You can find many Korean series about detectives and crime, which is without a doubt, one of my favorite genres. I recommend The Good Detective because the story is fresh in many ways, and it’s catchy from episode 1. You will really like this plot. If you already watched it, let me know your thoughts!
